Financial Support for Victims of Domestic Abuse

18th January 2024

The Home Office has announced that from 31 January, victims of domestic abuse will be able to apply for payments from support services to assist them in buying essential items or support for new accommodation..

“From 31 January, victims of domestic abuse who do not have the financial means to leave their abusers will be able to apply for a one-off payment of up to £500 via one of over 470 support services, for essential items such as groceries, nappies or support with new accommodation to help them and their children flee to safety.

For the first time, victims can also apply for a further one-off payment of up to £2,500 to help secure a sustainable independent future, such as putting down a deposit for rental accommodation. This will help them move forward with their lives and prevent homelessness or pressure to return to abusers because of financial strain”.

At Williscroft, we welcome the news that there will be financial support available for those who are in, or are leaving, abusive relationships. Often, victims of domestic abuse have to flee their home urgently, taking with them very little. Such support will provide much needed assistance for those in need in conjunction with the legal services we provide. This is a positive step towards improving support for those in need in order for them and their children to remain secure and safe.
