Asia Majid, Associate Solicitor
Family Law, Welfare Benefits
I obtained my law degree from Bradford University and did the Legal Practice Course at Leeds Metropolitan University. I have always lived in Yorkshire and I believe this provides me with a good background and insight to cultural and ethical issues in the society.
I have experience in the following areas:
- Family: I undertake a variety of family work. I can assist clients after separation this can involve resolving future contact/living arrangements for children, advising about parental responsibility and or providing advice about the separation and help with sorting the matrimonial home. I am also a member of Resolution and we aim to try and resolve issues in a non confrontational manner.
- Injunctions: This is one of my areas of passion which I have particular interest for. I have worked with supporting clients of various backgrounds who are victims of domestic violence and can obtain emergency protection for them whether this involves court proceedings to remain in the home or fleeing domestic violence to a safe place.
- Welfare benefits: I can advise clients on entitlement to various benefits and can assist clients with appeals which can be a daunting experience. I love a challenge and currently have a housing benefit case ongoing at the Upper Commissioners Tribunal which could make a big impact on housing costs applications. I have had some very good outcomes at appeals ranging from alleged capital/overpayments/DLA and the new benefit Employment and Support Allowance.
- I can also prepare simple wills; change of name deeds and statutory declarations.
- I am a CPI qualified interpreter and can speak Urdu, Punjabi, and Mirpuri which I find is extremely useful when clients want to speak to me directly.
